RBS operates a modular programme structure. Modules are self contained blocks or units of study, each of which is based on a particular subject area and accessed seperately. The period of study for a professional qualification and/or a Master's degree is normally two years. Certain core modules are compulsory, others can be selected from a wide range of available options. The basic unit of instruction is the lecture, where students are familiarised with a subject's main theoretical concepts and ideas. In addition, at RBS, there is a strong belief in small group teaching in support of more formal lecture sessions. Small-group teaching varies from module to module but includes tutorials, seminars, workshops, computer laboratory sessions and case study classes.



ASSESSMENT

Assessment procedures vary considerably across modules and courses. In general, most modules are examined either by a mixture of coursework and written examination or by coursework alone except for professional courses where only written examination is applicable. In the case of academic courses, the respective proportions of the two elements (coursework and written examination) can vary considerably between different types of module and therefore may be different for the different degree programmes. Towards the end of the programme, students have the opportunity to engage in independent, in-depth research activity in the form of a dissertation in lieu of some taught programme components.

The balance of assessment therefore varies according to the objectives of a particular programme.
