A Doctor of philosophy is one of the highest academic degrees. The main objective of doing a PhD is to become a competent academic, researcher or practitioner in one’s own chosen field. While Leeds Beckett University pursues world-class research, at Rushmore Business School, we provide professional and self-motivated individuals with the skills to explore their chosen subject to its limits. Pursuing a Leeds Beckett University PhD involves three years of research supported by subject-specific skills training.
Features of the Programme
This programme has been designed to meet the following aims:
- Three years
- Supervision by respective school from Leeds Beckett University
- Additional local supervision, administrative and logistics support from Rushmore Business School.
- Access to University on-line resources through VLE,on-line research training, academic databases, etc.
- PhD awarded by Leeds Beckett University.
The proposed programme has a distinct feature of research training visits by Leeds Beckett University staff with supervision provided by Leeds Beckett University staff with additional support from local supervisors in Mauritius. This should promote the successful completion of the programme as it is an effective indicator of successful completion within a time frame of 3 years.
All applicants will be subject to the University’s standard entry criteria for the award of PhD. Entry requirements are normally an appropriate masters degree from the UK or one that is recognised by the University as equivalent. All applicants are required to demonstrate their command of the English language by sitting an IELTS test. Applicants with non-standard qualifications will be judged on their merits.
All candidates admitted under the proposed arrangement will attend a compulsory induction session at Rushmore Business School and are welcome to attend the Leeds Beckett induction in the UK.
Supervision will be provided by an appropriately qualified and experienced team of academic staff. All candidates will be provided with a Director of Studies and a Supervisor who are members of Leeds Beckett stastaff. The University will also seek to appoint an additional ‘in-country’ supervisor for each candidate. All members of a supervisory team will be appointed subject to the University’s standard regulations, criteria and procedures for the appointment of supervisory teams. Supervision will take place in the standard way as for other PhD distance learners (such as telephone conferencing / video-link / email contact / online discussion). As full-time PhD candidates,students can expect to engage in supervisory meetings on a monthly basis.
Confirmation of Registration
All candidates will be subject to the standard University regulations and procedures for Confirmation of Registration. The Confirmation of Registration Review Panel for candidates admitted under the proposed arrangements may take place in Mauritius through video-link. This would take place during the 1st visit by teaching staff from Leeds Beckett University.
All candidates will be subject to the standard University regulations and procedures for Annual Progression. The Annual Progression meeting / presentation may take place through video link in Mauritius.
Research Training and Research Traning Programme
All candidates will be subject to the standard University regulations and procedures in respect of the Research Training Programme. In addition to this, candidates admitted under the proposed arrangements will be provided with additional research training sessions which will take place twice per annum in-country at Rushmore Business School. These sessions will be delivered by local staff as part of a 3-day seminar consisting of sessions on the following topics:
- Research Methodology & Philosophy,
- Literature Review, Systematic Review,
- Secondary and Primary Data, Analysis of Data,
- Discussion of Findings,
- Writing up of Thesis, and Viva Preparation
Attendance at Leeds Beckett University (UK)
All doctoral students will have to spend a minimum of two months at the University during the course of their studies. This will normally be in the second year of studies and is compulsory.
All candidates will be subject to the standard university regulations and procedures in respect of the examination of a PhD award. All viva-voce examinations will take place in Leeds.
All candidates will be invited to graduate in Leeds at a scheduled University graduation ceremony
